Calling aspiring Medical Lab Technologists! Are you looking to grow your career in Laboratory Medicine while completing the CMLTO registration process? The Hospital for Sick Children is seeking individuals with a desire to kickstart their careers to join us as Non-Registered Technologists.
The Non-Registered Technologist performs and is responsible for a variety of laboratory tests and procedures and acts in accordance with the mission, vision, values and goals of the Department of Paediatric Laboratory Medicine (DPLM) and those of the Hospital, under direct oversight of a CMLTO registered Medical Laboratory Technologist and/or Medical/Scientific staff. They will support 24 hour / 7 days a week operations working all shifts on a rotational basis including weekends and holidays as scheduled. The Non-Registered Technologist will work in Genome Diagnostics Laboratory within the Division of Genome Diagnostics.
The Division of Genome Diagnostics (Molecular Genetics, Cytogenetics and Microarray, Clinical Fibroblast Service) specializes in advanced genetic testing for rare disorders and cancers affecting the paediatric population. Genome Diagnostics is also the first lab to establish a clinical genome-wide sequencing service in Canada, following the culmination of a successful pilot project that enabled testing for eligible paediatric and adult patients in Ontario.
As a valued member of a large, collaborative team comprising 100 laboratory and technical staff, you will play a key role in our complex testing pathway, which utilize the latest technology in next generation sequencing and informatics, karyotype imaging and analysis, and automated sample preparation. This is a dynamic role in a rapidly advancing field, with diverse learning and growth opportunities beyond routine testing, such as test development, case review participation, and teaching.
The Department of Paediatric Laboratory Medicine (DPLM) at SickKids is a leading, world-class facility working towards reducing the impact of childhood illness by providing diagnostic information that allows for early selection of best treatment options. DPLM is a valuable and integral part of the SickKids team, generating original research and providing timely, specialized diagnostic services for health care providers in Canada and around the world. The department comprises of five divisions: Clinical Biochemistry, Genome Diagnostics, Haematopathology, Microbiology, and Pathology. All DPLM laboratories are accredited by Accreditation Canada Diagnostics.

Here's What You'll Get To Do
- Practice and perform a variety of laboratory procedures with accuracy and efficiency in accordance with the policies, processes and procedures of the Department of Paediatric Laboratory Medicine
- Maintain competence in the receiving, handling, processing, identification, recording, labeling and dispatch of specimens for laboratory testing
- Operate and maintain laboratory equipment according to DPLM procedures
- Recognize failure, troubleshoot, take appropriate corrective action and maintain documentation of laboratory equipment
- Actively participate in Quality Assurance and Quality Improvement activities to meet DPLM objectives
- Recognize unusual situations and reports immediately to an MLT
- Work in compliance with the provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act
- Recognize unsafe work practices, potential hazards and unusual occurrences in the work area
- Assist in maintaining inventory control to ensure availability of adequate reagents and supplies
- Maintain competency as a Laboratory Technician through participation in training and continuing education
- Participate in special projects or other duties as assigned by an MLT, Resource Technologist or Team Leader
- Follow all aspects of the Quality System
Here's What You'll Need
- Bachelor of Science and/or diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology
- Bachelor of Science MLS or equivalent
- Previous job-related experience required: Laboratory Technologist or technician experience an asset.
- Demonstrated intent to become registered with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO) as a Medical Lab Technologist in Clinical Genetics
- Experience with paediatrics is an asset
