Job Description:
The Controller oversees the day-to-day financial operations of the organization, by leading the Finance business team to deliver accurate and timely financial data on which to base planning, performance evaluation and operating decisions. The Controller, who reports directly to the Vice President, Finance will ensure adherence to accounting practices, internal controls and procedures, integrity of management information and safeguarding of assets while providing strong managerial, operational, organizational, communication and customer service to all stakeholders, including Boards, Committees and the Senior Leadership Team.
Accountabilities & Responsibilities:
- Oversee group of companies’ budgets, financial reports and accounting functions is accurate and up to date.
- Focus on the accounting and reporting functions, ensuring the team is meeting daily weekly and monthly goals.
- Ability to lead a team to complete month end and year end processing in a timely and efficient manner. Monitoring team progress to meet reporting targets.
- Oversee all deadlines for GST, PST, QST, HST, Workers' Compensation, and CRA requirements, ensuring reporting processes and payments are completed accurately and on time.
- Present the financial conditions, cash flow and weekly/monthly financial positions to the Executive Team and Board on a regular basis.
- Oversee the existing financial reporting systems and databases, supporting MSIs numerous locations and operations, including working closely with other teams including Operations, HR, Sales, and Investments.
- Ensure adherence to company policies and procedures including, but not limited to, Finance policies and procedures, compliance and making recommendations for improvements.
- Ongoing review of financial and governance policies.
- Implementation of proper balance sheet reporting.
- Monitoring compliance with debt covenants.
- Oversee adherence to the use and processing of funds and investments.
- Oversee activities in the chart of accounts including the statement of financial position accounts and statement of revenue and expense accounts.
- Supervise and mentor accounting staff and financial analysts.
- Day to day issue resolution and support across the Finance business unit and all financial matters impacting MSI’s group of companies.
- Work with VP Finance on various projects.
Knowledge, Skill and Abilities:
- Strong leadership skills, ability to influence others and manage change.
- Experience supervising staff including the ability to lead by example.
- Lead, motivate, and develop team members to deliver ongoing individual performance improvement through coaching and training
- Willingness to roll up their sleeves and work with the team to ensure targets and deadlines are meet.
- Subject matter expert in regard to legislative and accounting standards.
- Expert level experience with QuickBooks, financial reporting systems and understanding of all levels of the accounting team.
- Demonstrated knowledge of financial systems management controls, processes, and tools.
- Experience with negotiation, conflict resolution, interpersonal skills, and a collaborative approach when dealing with stakeholders.
- Experience with integrating new systems, working with all stakeholders to adopt new processes and change management.
- Proficient computer skills in MS Office applications.
- Strong communication skills are required.
- Ability to maintain a positive demeanor and foster team spirit.
- Understand the purpose and relevance of company policies and procedures, ensuring team commitment.
Requirements/Qualifications:
- CPA designation is in good standing
- 5-7 years of experience at a senior level in progressively more challenging positions.
- Experience in both public and industry, considered an asset
- Undergraduate degree – Bachelor of Business or Commerce or equivilant
- Experience in real estate acquisitions and real estate development is considered an asset.
- Prior managerial responsibility for professional staf
Job Types: Full-time, Permanent
Pay: $85,000.00-$100,000.00 per year
